Twin Infants Found Dead in Waterbody, Parents Detained in Munshiganj

In a tragic incident, the bodies of five-month-old twin sisters were recovered from a waterbody in Munshiganj’s Sreenagar upazila. The incident took place on Monday evening around 7:15 PM in Bibondi village, Kukutia Union. The infants, identified as Lamia and Samia, were allegedly killed by being thrown into the water. Their parents have been detained by the police, with both accusing each other of the crime.

According to locals, about one and a half years ago, Shanta Akter (18) from the nearby Doyahata Majidpur village married Mohammad Sohag (32), a day laborer from Bibondi village, in an arranged marriage. Tensions reportedly arose between the couple a few months after their marriage, leading to frequent disputes. The birth of their twin daughters five months ago exacerbated their financial struggles, intensifying conflicts between Shanta and Sohag. On Monday evening, Shanta informed neighbors that her daughters were missing. Later, the two infants were found unconscious in a nearby waterbody and were rushed to Sreenagar Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.

Sohag’s relatives allege that he had left for the nearby market in the afternoon, leaving the infants in Shanta’s care, and claim that Shanta threw the children into the water. Conversely, Shanta’s relatives accuse Sohag of committing the act before heading to the market. Abdul Kaiyum, a member of Kukutia Union Parishad, stated, “There are rumors that one of the parents threw the infants into the water. There are conflicting narratives from both sides, and we are trying to uncover the truth.” Since the incident, Shanta has been largely unresponsive. Both she and Sohag have been taken to Sreenagar Police Station for questioning. Mohammad Nazmul Huda, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreenagar Police Station, told Prothom Alo on Tuesday morning around 10:30 AM that the parents have been detained. Preliminary investigations suggest their involvement in the infants’ deaths. A case is being prepared, and the couple will be sent to court for a remand to facilitate further questioning.
