BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Times are not good right now; many people are saying many things, and many are feeling disheartened. I am always an optimistic person. Despite my age, I believe better times are coming. Even better days will follow.” He made these remarks as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the “Civil Discourse Nationals-2025” debate competition held at the Abdul Karim Sahityabisharad Auditorium, Bangla Academy, Dhaka, on Tuesday (July 8) evening. The event was organized by The Bangladesh Dialogue (TBD).Mirza Fakhrul said, “The generation gap is quite wide. It takes me time to understand the youth, and perhaps it takes them time to understand us. This is causing some political issues. If we could bridge this gap, many problems could be resolved.” He added, “We have little connection with Gen-Z. We need to increase this engagement. The mindset in Dhaka is not the same as in Thakurgaon. This distance must be bridged. Otherwise, we won’t reach the point where we can build the generation, the force, the army that will transform Bangladesh.”
Expressing optimism about the youth, he said, “Our young generation is becoming far more capable than us and will play a bigger role in the country’s future. There are debates, disagreements, and differences of opinion. We believe in liberal democracy. I must have the freedom to speak, and you must have the same. That is true democracy.”
Urging to avoid the term “honorable,” he said, “Can’t we stop using ‘honorable prime minister’ or ‘honorable speaker’? I feel this word ‘honorable’ is where autocracy begins.” He further noted, “Here, as soon as someone becomes a minister, they enter a different world. Their salutes, sirens, cars in front and behind—this mindset gradually leads to dictatorship.”
Hosted by TBD Director Saif Rubab, the event also featured speeches by Dhaka College Principal Professor AKM Elias, Dhaka University Professor Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuiyan, lawyer Rashna Imam, Adcom Limited Managing Director Nazim Farhan Chowdhury, BNP International Committee member Israfeel Khasru, Dhaka College Debating Society (DCDS) President Shahadat Hossain, DCDS Chief Moderator Professor Akhtaruzzaman, and TBD Managing Director Rubayet Mannan Rafi, among others.
