Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has accused Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami of hypocrisy regarding the upcoming election. He stated that while Jamaat is publicly advocating for delaying the election, it is simultaneously nominating candidates for various parliamentary constituencies. This, he claimed, is a clear display of double standards. According to Rizvi, reports in newspapers indicate that Jamaat has already nominated candidates for more than 33 to 34 constituencies.
Rizvi Accuses Jamaat of Double Standards Over Election
He made these remarks on Sunday (July 6) during a discussion and prayer program organized by BNP at its central office in Naya Paltan to mark the occasion of Holy Ashura.
Rizvi further criticized Jamaat, saying that for decades, the party has failed to understand the sentiments of the people. Had they been attuned to public sentiment, they would not have opposed the Liberation War of 1971 or participated in General Hussain Muhammad Ershad’s election in 1986 alongside Sheikh Hasina. He accused Jamaat of disregarding the value of democracy and public opinion, pursuing their own political gains, which has repeatedly led to their setbacks. Currently, he claimed, Jamaat is misjudging the public’s pulse and attempting to delay the election.
Rizvi expressed hope that the current interim government would not extend the election timeline to favor any individual or party.
