A court in Manikganj has sentenced a 45-year-old man to death for raping a 9-year-old girl in the Manikganj municipal area. Additionally, the court imposed a fine of one lakh taka on the convict. The verdict was delivered by Judge M A Hamid of the Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Sunday afternoon.The convicted individual, originally from Jessore Sadar Upazila, resided with his family in a rented house in the Manikganj municipal area. He was present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict. According to court-related sources, the victim was known to the convict. The incident occurred on the night of August 31, 2019. Following the incident, the victim’s mother filed a case against the accused at Manikganj Sadar Police Station. The investigation was conducted by the then Officer-in-Charge of the station, Rakibuzzaman. On February 9, 2020, the investigating officer submitted a charge sheet against the accused to the Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. The court recorded the testimonies of 13 witnesses in the case. The case was prosecuted by Humayun Kabir, the Public Prosecutor of the Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. He stated that based on the documents and evidence provided by the witnesses, the allegations were proven, leading the tribunal judge to sentence the accused to death and impose a fine of one lakh taka.
