London-Based Expat Family Robbed Near Banani Graveyard After Arriving at Dhaka Airport

A London-based expatriate family was robbed near the Banani Graveyard area in Dhaka shortly after arriving at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday morning. The robbers, posing as Detective Branch (DB) police officers, looted gold jewelry worth approximately Tk 1.5 million, cash, US dollars, and two iPhones from the family. A case has been filed at Banani Police Station regarding the incident.

According to police, citing the family’s account, the robbers held the family hostage and used intimidation tactics, leaving them deeply traumatized. The family has chosen not to disclose their identities due to the distress caused by the ordeal.

Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Russell Sarwar stated that the robbers, impersonating DB officers, used signal lights similar to those used by police to stop the microbus carrying the family. “They stopped the vehicle using the same kind of lights typically used by regular police to signal vehicles to halt. Then, they snatched the bags and fled,” he said.

Police suspect that the robbers had been following the family from the airport. The family had hired a microbus to travel from the airport to their destination when the robbery occurred near the Banani Graveyard.
