llegations of Extortion Against BNP and Awami League Leaders in Kurigram

In Roumari Upazila, Kurigram, allegations have surfaced against several leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Awami League for demanding 50,000 taka in extortion from a retired army personnel. The victim, Motalleb Hossain, filed a written complaint with the police on Wednesday. Motalleb Hossain, a resident of Bandber Union in Roumari Upazila, is a retired army member and works as an agent for City Bank at Baitkamari Bazar. In his written complaint, Motalleb Hossain alleged that on Tuesday night at around 9:30 PM, a group led by Bandber Union BNP Joint Convener Monibur Rahman, Upazila Tanti Dal General Secretary Abdul Bashed, and local Awami League leader Altaf Hossain came to his shop and demanded 50,000 taka. When he refused, they verbally abused and physically assaulted him. Motalleb Hossain stated that his screams attracted locals, including Ziaur Rahman, who intervened and took him to a local physician for treatment. He now feels insecure and claims to have CCTV footage of the incident. When contacted regarding the allegations, Ward Awami League leader Altaf Hossain did not respond to multiple calls. However, BNP leader Monibur Rahman told *Prothom Alo* over the phone, “Baitkamari Hatghat is leased in my name. Motalleb and his brother run a sand business using trawlers. When I went to collect the toll for the ghat, he abused us instead.” Roumari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bikash Chandra Roy confirmed receiving the complaint and told “Sub-Inspector Mosaddek Hossain has been assigned to investigate. If the allegations are found to be true, necessary actions will be taken
