Juba Dal Leader Muhammad Selim Shot Dead in Raozan, Burqa-Clad Attackers Flee via Hilly Route

In Raozan, Chittagong, Juba Dal leader Muhammad Selim (40) was shot dead in broad daylight, after which burqa-clad attackers escaped through a hilly route by switching auto-rickshaws. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM on Sunday (July 6) in the Ishan Bhatter Hat area of Kadlapur Union. CCTV footage from a nearby house captured the incident, which has since gone viral on social media.[

The deceased, Selim, was a resident of Shamsherpara village in Ward 6 of Kadlapur Union and the son of Amir Hossain. He was involved in the sand trade and poultry farming and served as the member secretary of Kadlapur Union Juba Dal in the 2022 committee. He leaves behind a son in fifth grade and an 18-month-old daughter. According to Selim’s wife, Ferdous Akter, they were returning on a motorcycle from a relative’s funeral when the attackers, emerging from a CNG auto-rickshaw, shot Selim in the head after he stopped to buy medicine. CCTV footage shows seven to eight masked and burqa-clad attackers, one armed with a firearm, disembarking from an auto-rickshaw and moving around the area. They later boarded another auto-rickshaw and fled toward the hilly region via the Hazrat Ashraf Shah Mazar road. Onlookers were seen fleeing in fear during the incident. Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan said three to four perpetrators have been identified, including a known criminal, Muhammad Rayhan. “Rayhan has been involved in multiple murders in Raozan Sadar and Kadlapur since August 5. Selim was killed due to a dispute over dominance,” he added. He noted that no case has been filed yet due to the ill health of Selim’s wife, but a case will be filed soon, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice. Police stated that the attackers have evaded capture by frequently changing locations. CCTV footage from the area is being analyzed to identify the culprits. Police and local sources suggest the murder may be linked to political rivalries or business-related dominance. Locals noted that Selim also faced several criminal and political cases.
According to local residents, since August 18, Raozan has witnessed 10 political murders, numerous shootings, clashes, and abductions, attributed to conflicts between two local BNP factions. Over 35 cases have been filed in connection with these incidents, police said.
