Durgapur, Rajshahi, July 16, 2025: A shocking incident unfolded in Palasha village of Durgapur Upazila, Rajshahi, where a 10-month-old child became critically ill after consuming food laced with poison, allegedly prepared by his mother, Ripa Khatun (22), with the intent to kill her husband. The child, Aiyan Ahmed, is currently undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night around 10:30 PM at the residence of Mominur Rahman in Palasha village, Nowpara Union. Mominur and Ripa, married for two years, had been facing marital discord since their wedding. Ripa frequently left for her parental home and recently expressed her unwillingness to continue the marriage, even after the birth of their only child, Aiyan Ahmed.
On the day of the incident, Ripa informed Mominur that she intended to return to her father’s house. When he objected, an enraged Ripa allegedly mixed pesticide used for agricultural purposes into a meat curry intended for her husband. However, when their 10-month-old son began crying, Mominur fed him a small portion of rice and the poisoned curry. Immediately after consuming the food, the infant started vomiting.
Ripa later confessed to mixing poison in the curry and advised taking the child to the hospital. The infant was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he remains under treatment.
Durgapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Durul Hoda described the incident as deeply unfortunate. He stated, “We have not received any formal complaint regarding this matter. If a complaint is lodged, necessary actions will be taken following an investigation.”
