Government Suspends Former DMP Officer Iqbal Hossain Amid Controversy Over July Uprising

The former Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Wari Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, who became highly controversial during the July uprising, has been temporarily suspended from government service.

The Ministry of Home Affairs published a notification regarding his suspension on Wednesday (July 23).

According to the notification signed by Senior Secretary Nasimul Gani, Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, who was previously stationed in the Wari Division, is currently attached to the Khulna Range DIG office. The notice states that Iqbal Hossain has been absent from his duties without permission since August 28 of the previous year.

In accordance with government service regulations, which categorize his prolonged absence as absconding and a punishable offense, Mohammad Iqbal Hossain has been suspended from his position starting from the date of his absence. During his suspension, he will continue to receive subsistence allowance.

Iqbal Hossain came under intense public scrutiny when a video surfaced showing him providing information to the then Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan during the student protests. In the video, he can be heard saying, "We need to shoot and bring down bodies, sir. Shoot one dead, wound one. One goes, sir, the rest don't. This is the biggest source of fear and anxiety, sir."

The video, which showed a police officer discussing lethal force against unarmed protesters, went viral and triggered widespread condemnation, further leading to his suspension.
