Former Rajshahi District Registrar Sent to Jail in ACC Corruption Case

A Rajshahi court has sent Abul Kalam Azad, former District Registrar of Rajshahi, to jail in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The order was issued on Tuesday (July 29) at 11:30 AM by Judge Asad Md. Asifuzzaman of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court.

ACC lawyer Bazle Towhid Al Hasan Babla confirmed the development, stating that a warrant had already been issued against Azad in the case. On the scheduled hearing date, Azad appeared in court and sought bail through his lawyer. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered his imprisonment.

Abul Kalam Azad is a resident of Mirpur village in Gabtali upazila of Bogura district. He currently lives in a flat in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka. During his service, he held the position of District Registrar in Rajshahi.

The ACC filed the case against him in December 2023, accusing him of illegally acquiring wealth worth Tk 1 crore 28 lakh 12 thousand 148 (approximately 12.8 million taka). Following the court's order, further legal procedures will be carried out, ACC sources said.
