The individuals sentenced to life imprisonment are Mehedi Hasan Jamshed (21), son of the late Dr. Abul Hashem from Morokota village in Sonagazi upazila, Feni district, and Shahidul Islam Masud alias Masum (32), son of the late Fazlul Haque, foster son of Monir Ahammad Dealer, from South Char Chandia village in the same upazila.
The six individuals sentenced to 10 years imprisonment are Jashim Uddin Patwary, son of Abul Kalam from Chandla Patwary Bari in Sonagazi upazila, Feni; Jamal Hossain Manik, son of A. Halim from Gangra (Dhancha) village in Chauddagram upazila, Cumilla; Ekramul Haque Milan, son of Momtaz Uddin from Dhorkara village in the same upazila; Ibrahim alias Bara Miah, son of Ruhul Amin alias Ruhuiyla Chora from South Mangalkandi village in Companyganj upazila, Noakhali; Alauddin Tota, son of Robiul Haque, foster son of Dulal Miah from Sahadia village in Sonagazi upazila, Feni; and Shahabuddin, son of the late Muzaffar Hossain from West Sonai village in Mirsarai upazila, Chattogram. All convicted individuals are currently absconding.
According to the case details, on the night of May 16, 2009, around 2 a.m., the victim, Md. Yusuf Bhuiyan Tipu, stepped outside his home to answer a call of nature. A gang of robbers, lying in wait, grabbed him and shot him dead before fleeing the scene. Following Tipu’s screams, local residents rushed to the spot, rescued him, and took him to the Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
In response to the incident, the victim’s father, Mohammad Ali (75), son of Yaub Ali from Tarashail village in Chauddagram upazila, Cumilla, filed a murder case at the Chauddagram Police Station against unidentified perpetrators. Using information technology, the police identified the accused. A charge sheet was submitted in 2011, and after framing charges in 2013, the court concluded the trial with the testimony of 16 witnesses and arguments, leading to the verdict.
Out of the 17 accused in the case, three—Ibrahim, Taju, and Abdur Razzaq—passed away during the trial. Six others were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The prosecution was conducted by Additional Public Prosecutors Advocate Md. Iftekhar Hossain, Md. Ikram Hossain, and Jalal Uddin Ahmed Tipu. The prosecution expressed satisfaction with the verdict.
