On Wednesday night (July 30), Narayanganj district BNP convener Professor Mamun Mahmud issued a signed letter confirming the expulsion of the five members involved in the incident.
The expelled individuals are: former general secretary of Mahmudpur Union BNP, Tota Member; former joint general secretary of Narayanganj district Chhatra Dal, Khokon Pradhan; and BNP members Rasel Pradhan, Alam Mia, and Saddam Hossain.
Earlier that morning, Jahangir Bhuiya was beaten to death in the Mahmudpur Union area of Araihazar upazila over a dispute concerning rent for a BNP office.
According to Jahangir’s son, Rasel, after August 5, Tota Member, a follower of BNP’s national executive committee member Mahmudur Rahman Sumon, rented three shops from his father at Salmadi Bazar for 30,000 taka annually. Two of these shops were converted into a BNP office.
Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khandaker Nasir Uddin stated, “The dispute arose over unpaid rent, leading to the assault on Jahangir. A case is being prepared, and police operations are ongoing to apprehend the culprits.”
In a statement, Professor Mamun Mahmud, the district BNP convener, described the incident as “deeply regrettable and condemnable,” adding that instructions have been given to take legal action against those involved.
