Sabina Yasmin Putul serves as the Nabinagar correspondent for the newspaper Bhorer Somoy. Locals say that while she was once known to be aligned with the Awami League, she became a vocal critic of the government through her role as an organizer of the anti-discrimination student movement.
The arrest has been met with approval from local BNP leaders and activists, who staged a protest at the Nabinagar police station demanding exemplary punishment for Putul instead of her release. They allege that she has been posting derogatory content and spreading misinformation on Facebook against BNP leaders, particularly targeting the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.
Nabinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Islam stated, “Evidence of Putul’s involvement in the attack on the anti-discrimination student movement’s procession in Shibpur on August 5 last year was found in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. She was arrested based on this evidence.”
