DU Students Protest in Response to Businessman’s Murder in Mitford

Students of Dhaka University staged a protest march in response to the brutal murder of a businessman named Chand Mia, alias Sohag, in the Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital compound in Old Dhaka, as well as the ongoing extortion and terrorist activities by BNP across the country.

The protest march began at 7:30 PM on Friday (July 11) in the university’s hall area and concluded with a brief rally at the Vice-Chancellor’s Square. During the protest, students chanted slogans such as: “Action, action, direct action; Jubo Dal’s many traits, stoning Sohag to death; Jubo Dal’s extortionists, beware; Jubo Dal’s terrorism, students will resist; BNP’s terrorists, beware; Why did my brother die? Tarique Rahman, answer; Why the Mitford murder? Tarique Rahman, answer; Why terrorism across the country? BNP, answer; Light the fire, ignite the flame.” At the rally, students condemned the killing, stating that Jubo Dal members brutally murdered businessman Sohag by stoning him for refusing to pay extortion money and then danced barbarically around his body. DU student AB Zubayer said, “Since August 5, we have been trying to rebuild the country. The only obstacle in this path has been one particular party. The video of Sohag’s murder has surfaced today. A nationalist extortionist party killed a businessman in a barbaric manner by stoning him for refusing to pay extortion. Have we returned to the Stone Age?” He added, “Across the country, BNP leaders and activists are engaging in extortion, rape, and murder. The country has become a safe haven for extortionists. After murders by BNP activists, a call comes from London saying, ‘Sister, this is Tarique speaking.’” Bin Yamin Molla, president of Bangladesh Student Rights Council, said, “Just as students are protesting today over Sohag’s murder, we protested similarly during Awami League’s time. BNP is failing to control its leaders and workers. For the past 16 years, they claimed to be oppressed, but if the oppressed become oppressors now, Allah’s throne will tremble.” He further demanded, “We want justice for these extortionist terrorists. In the last ten months, BNP has killed a hundred people. We demand justice for all these murders.” Molla also asserted that no elections should take place without reforms.
