In Sirajganj’s Kamarkhand Upazila, a seven-year-old girl named Hazera Khatun was allegedly strangled to death by her stepmother, who is now on the run.
On Sunday night around 10:00 PM, police recovered the child’s body, stuffed in a sack, from under a bed in a house in Kutirchar village of Bhadraghat Union. The murder is believed to have taken place earlier that afternoon.
The stepmother, Rubi Khatun, has been absconding since the incident.
The deceased, Hazera Khatun, was the daughter of Harun Ar-Rashid from the same village. She was a first-grade student at Kutirchar Government Primary School. Rubi Khatun is Harun Ar-Rashid’s second wife.
According to police and locals, Hazera’s biological mother remarried another man about four to five years ago. Subsequently, Harun married Rubi Khatun. Since then, Hazera had been living with her father, stepmother, and grandparents. Rubi has twin sons.
Hazera’s grandmother, Monowara Khatun, alleged that Hazera went missing after returning from school in the afternoon. Around the same time, Rubi left the house with her two children, claiming she was going to buy medicine, but did not return by evening. When Hazera could not be found, relatives discovered her body in a sack inside a bucket under a bed in the house.
Sirajganj’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Kamarkhand Circle) Robiul Islam confirmed the incident and said the body was recovered around 10:00 PM. Preliminary investigations suggest the stepmother may have killed the child by strangulation or physical assault. The exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy. He added that preparations for filing a case are underway.
