Blackmail Case Filed in Satkhira Over Extortion Attempt Against Journalist

Satkhira, July 5, 2025 – A case has been filed in Satkhira under the Pornography and Extortion Acts following an incident where a journalist was targeted with blackmail using a manipulated video. The complaint was lodged at Satkhira Sadar Police Station on Saturday afternoon, July 5.

The accused include Al-Amin Sardar from Kashiadanga village in Patkelghata, Rina Khatun from the Palashpol area of the town, Kamrul Hasan from Ratanpur village in Kaliganj, and 5-6 unidentified individuals.

According to the case details, the perpetrators downloaded an unclear video from an Indian pornographic website and edited it to include the journalist’s photo in the corner. The manipulated video was sent to the journalist via WhatsApp, accompanied by threats to share it on Facebook unless a substantial sum of money was paid. When the journalist refused to comply, the video was circulated on various Facebook accounts and WhatsApp, both under the accused's names and anonymously. Mahbub Rahman, Director of the Satkhira Cyber Alert Team, reviewed the video and stated that there is no resemblance between the person in the original video and the journalist whose image was added. A Google Lens search traced the video to various Indian pornographic websites. Abul Kashem, President of the Satkhira Press Club, condemned the incident, noting that the targeted journalist is a well-known and honest professional who was active during the August 5 mass uprising. He dismissed claims linking the journalist to the video as baseless and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. “If the culprits are not apprehended, the Satkhira journalist community will take to the streets,” he warned.
Shafiqur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, confirmed to Kalbela that a case has been filed against the three named individuals and the unidentified accomplices under the Pornography and Extortion Acts. Police are actively working to arrest the suspects.
