Bangladesh Loses ODI Series to Sri Lanka Due to Batting Collapse

In a batting-friendly pitch at Pallekele, Bangladesh was bowled out for 186 in 39.4 overs while chasing Sri Lanka’s 285, resulting in a 99-run defeat. This loss handed Sri Lanka a 2-1 victory in the three-match ODI series. The final match, played on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) in Kandy, was dominated by Bangladesh’s batting failure.

Sri Lanka’s innings was powered by Kusal Mendis’s brilliant 124 off 114 balls and captain Charith Asalanka’s 58 off 68 balls, helping them reach 285/7 in 50 overs. Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz (2/48) and Taskin Ahmed (2/51), showed some resistance but failed to contain Sri Lanka’s batsmen. Lackluster fielding and high economy rates (except Miraz, all bowlers had economy rates above 5) allowed Sri Lanka to post a competitive total.

Bangladesh’s batting faltered, with only Towhid Hridoy scoring a fifty (51 off 78 balls), which was too slow to impact the 285-run chase. Contributions from Miraz (28), Parvez Hossain (28), and Jaker Ali (27) were insufficient, and the absence of significant partnerships led to a collapse. Sri Lanka’s pacers Asitha Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera took three wickets each, dismantling Bangladesh’s batting lineup.

A Sri Lankan cricket official expressed disappointment, stating, “Bangladesh couldn’t even put up a fight. There’s no joy in watching such a match.” Kusal Mendis was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series. Bangladesh will face Sri Lanka in the first T20I match at the same venue tomorrow.
