Anti-Discrimination Student Movement: 17 Accused Presented in Tribunal for Abu Sayed Murder, Lakshmipur Massacre, and Ashulia Body Burning Cases

 A total of 17 accused individuals involved in the murder of Abu Sayed in Rangpur, the massacre of five people in Lakshmipur, and the burning of six bodies in Ashulia during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have been presented before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The accused were brought to the tribunal in prison vans on Monday morning.

Abu Sayed Murder in Rangpur

On July 16, 2024, during the July uprising, Abu Sayed, a student of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, was killed by police gunfire. In this case, four of the 30 accused were presented in the tribunal. They are—former SI Amir Hossain, Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, former university proctor Shariful Islam, and Chhatra League activist Imran Chowdhury Akash.

On June 30, the tribunal took cognizance of the charges in this case and issued arrest warrants against 26 fugitive accused. On July 13, the tribunal ordered the publication of notices in national newspapers for 24 fugitive accused. The prosecution stated that Abu Sayed was killed by police gunfire, with Amir Hossain and Sujan Chandra Roy directly involved in the killing. Shariful Islam and Imran Chowdhury Akash provided assistance and incitement in the incident.

The tribunal, led by Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, is conducting the hearings for this case. The prosecution was represented by prosecutors Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar, Abdus Sattar Palowan, and BM Sultan Mahmud.

Lakshmipur Massacre

During the July-August movement, a case was filed alleging crimes against humanity for the killing of five people, including students, in Lakshmipur. Three accused—Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila Awami League president Humayun Kabir Patwary, Dighli Union Parishad chairman Salah Uddin Jabed, and district Chhatra League organizing secretary Shahin Alam—were presented in the tribunal on Monday.

The three-member tribunal panel, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, issued this order. The other members of the panel are retired district judge Md. Manjurul Basid and district judge Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir. The prosecution was represented by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Prosecutor Abdus Sattar Palowan.

Burning of Six Bodies in Ashulia

During the July-August uprising, seven accused were presented in the tribunal in a case involving the killing of six individuals and the subsequent burning of their bodies in Ashulia, charged as a crime against humanity. The accused are—former Additional Superintendent of Police (Dhaka District) Md. Abdullahil Kafi, former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Md. Shahidul Islam, then OC AFM Sayed, DB Inspector Md. Arafat Hossain, SI Malek, and Constable Mukul.

On July 2, the tribunal took cognizance of the charges in this case and issued arrest warrants against eight fugitive accused, including former MP Muhammad Saiful Islam. The prosecution submitted a 173-page formal charge sheet. The three-member tribunal panel, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, is conducting the hearings for this case.
