A woman has accused a member of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Hazaribagh, Dhaka, of rape under the pretense of marriage. When the victim's family attempted to file a case at Hazaribagh Police Station, they claimed the police refused to register it, leading to a two-day social media campaign highlighting the issue. The police, however, state that a General Diary (GD) has been filed, and a case will be registered if preliminary investigations confirm the allegations.
The victim's brother-in-law visited Hazaribagh Police Station on Saturday to file the case. Speaking to Prothom Alo on Sunday, he alleged that the accused, who resides in Hazaribagh, had an eight-year romantic relationship with his sister-in-law. He claimed the accused raped her in June under the promise of marriage. However, he alleged that the police refused to accept the case because the accused is an NCP leader.
Hazaribagh Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC), Saiful Islam, told Prothom Alo that while the accused resides in Hazaribagh, the alleged rape occurred in a house located in Kamrangirchar. The victim was advised to approach Kamrangirchar Police Station, and he denied claims that the police refused to take the case.
Police sources confirmed that the accused is reportedly an NCP leader in the Hazaribagh area, as claimed by the victim and her family. Some NCP leaders and activists visited the police station, stating they have no objection to a case being filed if the accused is involved in the crime, but they urged that he not be falsely implicated. However, NCP sources clarified that no formal NCP committee exists in Hazaribagh, and those claiming NCP affiliation were previously part of a citizens' committee.
Kamrangirchar Police Station's OC, Aminur Rahman, told Prothom Alo that a GD has been filed based on the victim's complaint, and an investigation is underway. A formal case will be registered if evidence of the rape is found during the investigation.
