Allegations of Bribery for Prisoner Visits in Naogaon Court’s Guard Room

Serious allegations of corruption have emerged against court police in Naogaon, where families claim they must pay bribes to meet detainees. Victims report that without payment, police deny access for conversations or visits.

Evidence of financial transactions was found at the scene. Detainees brought from various areas of the district are first held in the court’s guard room. Families visiting to meet them face demands: 200 taka for 10 minutes or 500 taka for unlimited time. Food is also provided only upon payment.

Mostafa from Patnitala Upazila stated, "In a land dispute case, four of my relatives were detained. I had to pay 1,000 taka per person for each visit." Nur Nabir, brother of a detainee, added, "We paid 200 taka initially, but police ended the meeting after 10 minutes. When we requested more time, they demanded 500 taka."

A detainee, Mitu, was seen smoking on the veranda while talking to relatives outside. He admitted, "I paid 500 taka to the police. Only then did they allow food and conversation." ASI Alamgir Hossain denied the allegations, claiming, "We take no money for prisoner meetings. These accusations are false."

Police Inspector AKM Nurul Islam stated, "There is no rule for taking money. We provide dry food and water on humanitarian grounds, but public smoking is prohibited. If evidence surfaces, we will take action." Police Super Mohammad Safiul Sarwar assured, "If complaints reach me, I will take necessary steps."
