The arrested individuals are Md. Arif Uddin (46) and Hafizul Islam Shamim (46).
According to Mirpur Police Station, the arrests were made during a raid in Section-2 of Mirpur around 11:30 PM on Thursday (September 4). Items recovered from their possession include one shotgun, one tube magazine, one bolt and bolt carrier, two body locking pins, a barrel jacket, a burnt trigger guard, and two shotgun lead cartridges.
DC Talebur Rahman stated that on Thursday night, a Mirpur Police team, while conducting a checkpoint near Tuli General Store in Section-2, found the movements of two individuals suspicious. Upon searching them, a plastic bag carried by Arif Uddin contained a shotgun, a tube magazine, a bolt and bolt carrier, two body locking pins, a barrel jacket, and a burnt trigger guard. Additionally, two shotgun lead cartridges were found in the pocket of Hafizul Islam Shamim. A regular case has been filed against the arrested individuals at Mirpur Police Station.
He further noted that during initial interrogation, the suspects admitted to collaborating with a fugitive named Nasir (45) to illegally buy and sell firearms and ammunition. Legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are underway.
Mirpur Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Sajjad Roman stated that around 10:30 PM on Thursday, a police team set up a security checkpoint at Road No. 4 in E-Block of Mirpur Section-2 to inspect suspicious individuals and vehicles. When Arif and Shahidul attempted to flee the checkpoint, police chased and apprehended them. A newspaper-wrapped shotgun was recovered from Arif, and two shotgun cartridges were found in Shahidul’s pocket.
The OC added that during initial questioning, Arif and Shahidul confessed to their involvement in the illegal arms trade. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend their accomplice, Nasir.
