The hilsa, dubbed a "king hilsa" for its size, was netted by fisherman Jahangir Halder on Friday night from the Char Karneshan Kalabagan area of the Padma River. Jahangir, along with his companions, had cast their nets at the river's confluence. When they pulled in the nets at dawn on Saturday, they discovered the large hilsa, which was then brought to the No. 5 ferry ghat market in Daulatdia for sale.
Samrat Sheikh, the buyer, shared, "I purchased the fish from Jahangir for 12,480 taka. With a small profit margin per kilogram, I sold it to a buyer in Thakurgaon district over the phone." He noted that while large hilsa are occasionally caught in the Padma, their numbers have dwindled, driving up prices for such rare catches.
Local fishermen and traders report that the declining hilsa population in the Padma River has made large specimens like this one highly sought after, often fetching premium prices from affluent buyers or expatriates. The sale has sparked excitement in the local market, highlighting the value of such catches in the region.
