Eight Killed in Natore Truck-Microbus Collision: Suspect Driver Mahir Uddin Arrested by RAB

 In a tragic incident in Natore’s Baraigram upazila, a head-on collision between a truck and a microbus claimed the lives of eight people, including seven passengers and the microbus driver. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested the accused truck driver, Mahir Uddin, in connection with the crash.

The arrest was made on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) around 10:00 PM from Bamandanga village in Natore’s Sadar upazila. Mahir Uddin, son of Momtaz Uddin, alias Sona Mia, hails from the same village.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Hafiz Al Asad, Commander of RAB-5 Natore Camp, the accident occurred on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway near the Airamari Bridge area in Baraigram. A cement-laden truck collided head-on with a microbus traveling from Kushtia to Sirajganj, resulting in the deaths of seven passengers and the driver. Following the incident, Mahir Uddin went into hiding, but RAB tracked him down using technological assistance and handed him over to the Bonpara Highway Police Station.

Prior to the arrest, Nazrul Islam, a relative of one of the victims, Jahidul Islam, filed a case under the Road Safety Act-2018 at Baraigram Police Station against the unidentified truck driver. The deceased were identified as Jahidul Islam (55), his wife Selina Khatun (50), his sister Roushanara Akhtar, alias Iti (48), his cousin Anwara Khatun (55), another cousin named Anwara Khatun (50), his mother-in-law Anjuman Khatun (65), his sister-in-law Sima Khatun (35), and the microbus driver Shahabuddin Ahmed (42).

Bonpara Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ismail Hossain confirmed that RAB handed over Mahir Uddin to the police on Wednesday night. The truck involved in the accident has been seized, and the investigation is ongoing. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families on the afternoon of the incident.

According to relatives, the victims were traveling to Sirajganj to visit Jahidul Islam’s daughter-in-law, Safia Begum, who was receiving treatment at a hospital there following a recent surgery. Her husband, Sohanur Rahman, works abroad in Kuwait.
