The deceased couple has been identified as Sohag Miya (23) and Jhuma Akter (19). Sohag was the son of Abdul Kuddus from Chaklengara village, while Jhuma was the daughter of Rahim Uddin from Kurulia village. The couple, married for about three years, had a two-year-old daughter. Police suspect their deaths occurred between 1 AM and 2 AM on Saturday night.
According to local residents, police, and family sources, Sohag had been living at his in-laws’ house in Kurulia since their marriage and worked as a mason. The couple had ongoing marital disputes. On Saturday night around 9 PM, they had an argument, which was mediated by Sohag’s father-in-law, Abdul Kuddus. Afterward, Sohag and Jhuma went to sleep in a separate room with their daughter. Around 2 AM, when their daughter woke up crying and wanted her mother, Abdul Kuddus went to the room and found Jhuma and Sohag hanging separately from the ceiling beam. He informed neighbors, who then contacted the police. The police arrived on Sunday morning and recovered the bodies.
Durgapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahmudul Hasan, speaking over the phone around 10 AM on Sunday, said, “Based on conversations with locals, it appears the incident may have stemmed from marital discord. The police are investigating the matter. The bodies have been prepared for autopsy and sent to the morgue at Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital. Preliminary findings suggest suicide, but a final conclusion will be drawn after receiving the autopsy report.”
