In Joypurhat’s Akkelpur, a youth named Manik (28), locally known as ‘Chaku Manik,’ was arrested by police on Monday evening around 7:30 PM from a road in front of the Upazila Parishad premises. Two knives were recovered from his possession during the arrest. Manik, son of Montu Miya from Sakhidar Para in Akkelpur municipality, has multiple cases against him, including attempted murder, theft, robbery, and dacoity, according to police.

During the arrest, a scuffle led to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rashidul Islam of Akkelpur Police Station sustaining injuries. He was treated at the Upazila Health Complex. Later, around 10 PM, Upazila Executive Officer Monjurul Alam sentenced Manik to one year of imprisonment without labor through a mobile court.

According to police and eyewitnesses, Manik had been released on bail a few days ago. On Monday evening, he was seen roaming the Upazila Parishad area with knives. Upon receiving information, Sub-Inspector Rakibul Islam and ASI Rashidul Islam arrived at the scene. While attempting to handcuff Manik, he tried to flee, leading to a scuffle during which ASI Rashidul was injured. With the help of locals, Manik was apprehended and taken to the police station.
Akkelpur Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation) Mominul Islam stated, “Manik was recently released on bail from prison. During his arrest, one of our officers was injured. He is also known to be a drug addict.”
